FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR KUPUNA and camp kia‘i

3/14/20 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COVID-19 response from Puʻuhonua o Puʻuhuluhulu.

Aloha ʻāina kākou,

Out of concern for the safety of our kūpuna and camp kiaʻi, and to do our part to help curb the proliferation of COVID-19, Puʻuhonua o Puʻuhuluhulu is requesting that our supporters and allies refrain from visiting the camp until the crisis has passed this critical stage. We are halting all visits by coordinated groups such as schools, conferences, clubs and organizations from coming to the puʻuhonua until further notice. Kūpuna and those with a higher risk of respiratory illness are especially asked to stay home.

We ask that ʻohana, individuals and small groups use discretion and commit to best practices in sanitation and sickness prevention while on the mauna. As much as it goes against our instincts, those at the puʻuhonua should refrain from honi and hugs and physical contact with each other. The camp remains under the watch and care of the Mauna Medic and Healers Hui under the direction of Dr. Kalama Nīheu.

If you are planning a visit, please plan on going DOWN the mountain in the evening as there are currently no overnight accommodations for visitors. Please also be prepared for the possibility that the camp may need to request that all visits stop if the threat of the virus continues to escalate. For more information about visits to the puʻuhonua, please contact Noe Noe Wong-Wilson, noenoe@hilo.net or Pua Case, puamk@gmail.com.

Finally, we want everyone to rest assured that we have made these decisions to reduce visitors with an understanding that there is no imminent threat of construction at this time. Should that time come, we will notify you all immediately. We remain committed to stop the TMT project on Maunakea and continue to work with our supporters and allies at the legislature, in Japan, Canada, U.S. and elsewhere toward this end.

Be well, take care of one another, and kū kiaʻi mauna always. E ola ka lāhui Hawaiʻi.

Me ke aloha,
The Puʻuhuluhulu ʻohana

LIKE A MIGHTY WAVE

Aloha kākou, today is Lā 150. This means that for nearly 5 months, we have protected Maunakea from the destruction of construction. Weʻve done so through a kūpuna blockade and through the establishment of Pu'uhonua o Pu'uhuluhulu Maunakea. None of this would have been possible were it not for the outpouring of support that has come from the lāhui Hawaiʻi, from our relatives around the world and from all of our allies.

This short film, Like A Mighty Wave, was created by Mikey Inouye, local boy and filmmaker who is a part of the immense talent that makes up our Mauna media team. The film captures the transformative impact that the sacrifice of our kūpuna on July 17th has had in Hawaiʻi - an impact that reverberates throughout the globe. Mahalo nui loa Mikey Inouye and the many members of the Mauna media team who helped capture this pivotal moment in history.

The film was spotlighted at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival in November. Mikey is now making it available to the public as a fundraiser for HULI to help ensure that this movement remains strong at every level. The film is free and accessible to all but we ask that as you take in the emotion and beauty of the movement captured in this film, that you also make a donation through HULIʻs action network page.

press statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 12/26/19

Press Statement from Pu'uhonua o Pu'uhuluhulu*

WE ARE COMMITTED AND WE WILL NOT LEAVE MAUNAKEA UNTIL THE TMT LEAVES HAWAI‘I

MAUNAKEA ACCESS ROAD, 12/26/19 - Today, we received written assurances from Mayor Harry Kim that construction of the TMT will not proceed until the end of February at the earliest and that law enforcement will stand down for the duration of that time. In response to the mayor's commitment, the kūpuna will open the road for safety reasons. They will remain in place alongside Maunakea Access Road with the full support of the Pu‘uhonua and will be prepared to respond to any threat of construction by TMT in the future.

We'd like to thank the hundreds of kia‘i who responded to the Hawai‘i island kāhea today and were on hand to hear from the kūpuna directly. We would like to remind everyone to remain vigilant and steadfast, as Aunty Noe Noe reminded us today, "if there are any signs of construction, we'll be right back in the middle of the road."

We are committed and we will not leave Maunakea until the TMT leaves Hawai‘i.
